What is Performance Max in Google Ads?
Performance Max is the Google Ads campaign type that runs across Google's entire inventory from a single campaign. It combines Search, Shopping, YouTube, Gmail, Discover and Display in one place. Google makes the targeting and bidding decisions, you supply the assets and the goal.

Performance Max is the most automated campaign type in Google Ads. You do not pick keywords, choose placements or set bids. Instead you supply images, text and video, and Google tries all of it across its own inventory.
That setup unsettles an experienced advertiser and genuinely works for small teams. The problem is that when it does not work, it is hard to see why.
When it is the right choice
Performance Max shines on a mature account, not a new one. It needs conversion data to learn from, and without that data it spends the budget exploring.
Situation | Suitable? |
|---|---|
E-commerce, product feed ready, 30+ conversions a month | Yes, this is where it is strongest |
New account, conversion tracking just set up | No, collect data with Search first |
You want to protect brand search | No, run a separate Search campaign |
A single product or service, narrow audience | Usually no, the loss of control outweighs it |
Asset groups: the real structure of the campaign
Performance Max has asset groups instead of keywords. An asset group is the set of images, headlines, descriptions and video shown to one audience.
Building one asset group per product category is the right approach. Putting the whole catalog into a single group stops Google telling which message belongs to which product.
At least 5 headlines, 5 descriptions, 3 images and 1 logo
If you add no video, Google generates one automatically and the quality is usually poor
An audience signal is not targeting, it is only a starting hint
Three common mistakes
The first is letting it swallow brand search. Performance Max also appears on searches for your own brand and turns traffic you would have got anyway into paid traffic. Excluding brand terms at account level requires requesting a brand exclusion list from Google.
The second is setting target ROAS too high. An unreachable target pushes the campaign to stay out of auctions entirely and spend stops. We covered why that happens in the article on budget not spending.
The third is intervening too early. Performance Max takes longer to learn than other types and needs about six weeks. A campaign switched off after two weeks never learned anything.
If Performance Max and a Shopping campaign use the same product feed, Performance Max takes priority and your Shopping campaign loses impressions. Running both at once usually kills the Shopping side.
The real problem with reporting
This is the most criticized side of Performance Max. The campaign does not show which channel the spend went to in the default reports. Search, YouTube and Display are not separated.
Asset group performance and search terms are partly visible, but there is no channel breakdown. That means making the budget decision blind.
Check which asset group brought conversions in the asset group report
Measure the share of brand terms in the search terms insight
Compare product-level performance against the Merchant Center side
Read the campaign over the same time range as your Search campaign, the two affect each other
Performance Max or Shopping
If your product feed is healthy and you have conversion data, Performance Max usually produces higher volume. If you want control and the catalog is small, a standard Shopping campaign is still defensible.
The decision comes down to your margin. On a thin-margin catalog the loss of control is expensive, on a wide margin the volume automation brings pays off.
