What is Google Merchant Center?
Google Merchant Center is the free tool you use to send your product information to Google. The product data uploaded here is used in free listings on the Shopping tab and in Shopping and Performance Max ads. Your products can appear without you running any ads at all.

Merchant Center is not an advertising tool, it is a data store. Its job is to hold your products' names, prices, stock status and images in a form Google can understand.
The advertising side uses that data, but the data also works on its own. Thanks to free product listings you can appear on the Shopping tab without running a single ad.
What a product feed is
The list through which your products are sent to Google is called a product feed. Your e-commerce platform usually generates it automatically and keeps it updated.
A feed arrives in one of three ways: your platform's official connection, a file address, or a manual upload. The automatic connection is the healthiest, because it updates itself when prices and stock change.
The built-in Google connection of platforms such as Shopify or WooCommerce
A file published from your server and read on a schedule
Manual upload, which only makes sense for very small catalogs
Required product information
Every product has to carry a set of information. A missing field leads to the product being disapproved or shown in a limited way.
Field | What it is | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
id | The product's unique code | Variants share the same code |
title | Product name | Promotional copy written into the title |
link | Product page address | Sitting behind a redirect chain |
image_link | Product image | Carries a watermark or promotional text |
price | Price | Not exactly the same as the price on the page |
availability | Stock status | Sold-out product left in the feed |
gtin | Barcode number | Left empty on a branded product |
Setup order
Open an account at merchants.google.com with your business details
Verify and claim your site address
Define your shipping and return policy in the account settings
Connect or upload your product feed
Wait for the first processing to finish, which usually takes a few hours
Check the diagnostics screen for disapproved products, and see the product disapproval article for the reasons and the order in which to fix them
Uploading a feed before defining the shipping and return policy is the most common setup mistake. The products are processed, but you get an account-level warning and none of them are published.
How Merchant Center relates to Google Ads
The two accounts are separate and have to be linked. Once the link is in place, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns use the product data in Merchant Center.
The practical consequence is this: part of your advertising performance depends not on your ad settings but on the quality of your product data. A product with a weak title or a poor image gets few impressions no matter what you bid.
Free listings
This is the least known side of Merchant Center. Once product data is approved, your products can appear on the Shopping tab and in some search results even if you run no ads.
For a business starting with a small catalog this is a free visibility channel, and all it requires is data quality.
